In this paper, millimeter-wave dual-polarization MIMO receiver in a 28-nm CMOS process are explained. Dual-polarization transmission utilizes orthogonal polarization modes to support simultaneous independent data streams on each two frequency channels, which doubles the effective channel capacity. The proposed receiver uses two receive chains with a single antenna, thus achieving 2x higher communication bits/symbol than a single- channel, single-polarization receiver. At this transmission, cross- polarization effect limits the signal-to-noise ratio of the dual- polarization transmission. To mitigate this effect, a cross- polarization canceller is presented. Also, cross-polarization canceller supports polarization control by changing phase and amplitude of each vertical- and horizontal-path. The dual- polarization canceller consists of two signal paths and two cancellation paths. Each path consists of phase shifter and variable gain amplifier. 60 GHz dual-polarization receiver with cross- polarization canceller is expected to achieve 14.08 Gb/s throughput at 10.5 pJ/bit efficiency and 16-quadrature amplitude modulation of single-carrier signaling. |
