Diagnostic tests play an important role in modern medicine, helping doctors make informed decisions regarding the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Protein biomarkers are used to detect the onset and progression of disease, the efficacy of drugs, and a patient's susceptibility to certain types of disease. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) will support sensitive and miniaturized portable biomarker detection. EIS is a highly sensitive sensing method used to find the electrical response of a chemical sample by applying a low amplitude alternating voltage/current with a tunable frequency. A monolithic multi-functional CMOS microelectrode array system will be developed that enables the EIS of the biomarkers at high spatiotemporal resolution. The electrode array includes 25,600 microelectrodes, densely packed within a 4 × 4 mm2 of sensing area at a pitch of 15 µm. |
