This work aims to develop sub-mm, individually addressable, untethered microsystems distributed over the brain cortex sequentially transmitting recorded data to external devices. Each distributed system consists of recording, stimulation, bio-impedance monitoring, power management, and data modulation module. 915 MHz frequency signal carries bi-direction data and power through an inductively coupled coil for wireless data communication. The uplink telemetry uses Load Shift Keying (LSK) modulation for reverse data transmission from the implant device to the external system. At the same time, the downlink employs Binary Phase Shift Keying (BPSK) modulation. In this system, networking is coordinated by externally installed Software Defined Radio (SDR). 4mm x 2mm area is used in 28nm RFCMOS technology to demonstrate the whole system, and each distributed system will be occupy 1mm x 1mm. |
